These words spring to my mind when I was watching a live webinar about digital story telling on Monday. The conference shared projects that used VR to tell personal and historical stories of events from history. They also used the words METAVERSE. I am a generation that grew up with out the internet will my children be the first to grow up with the introduction to the METAVERSE.
The speakers shared the possibilities of the MV being we can not only revisit historical events, individuals and films stars etc. But we can revisit loved ones who have passed away? And she finished with isn’t this amazing!
Really what about grief and the process of grief will this change our human ability to grief, how will this fit into spirituality?
I asked a question to the panel regarding accountability and who decides what is the truth about how histories? I think this is more apparent now than ever before. Leaving it up to schools, governments has proven problematic and in the age of everyone is a guru/master, particularly online how do we know what is the truth?
History is more important than ever before, perhaps because of information over load through our devices or algorithm.
You asked a good question about who decides on what is truth. Also the question of spirituality in terms of actual (rather than virtual) lived experience. Living and dying are visceral bodily experiences that involve our whole body and mind. Living experiences through the virtual cannot equate to visceral sensual experience, so I would be equally worried about this expansion of the metaverse, especially in the context of young people growing up in predominantly urban settings. But then I am an old man !
